Don't be fooled into thinking that these releases are about anything more than making money. No other reason for them to do it. As long as people continue to purchase them, they will continue to release them. Perhaps not life changing money, but probably not chump change either.

I don't know how much it would really be. I took a stab at analyzing how much Jerry's daughters and Tiff would get.

Since we know that Dave's Picks sets it's releases at 12,000 copies, let's assume that Rhino knows what they are doing based on previous releases. I don't think a GarciaLive performance would do as well. Let's assume that the GarciaLive vol. 1 could sell 10,000 copies(8,000 CD sets and 2,000 downloads). Based on the current prices on the Garcia site($24.99 for CD, $14.99 for download), that would yield $229,900 in gross sales.

Cost Assumptions:

-MusicToday charging about 15% of the gross for distribution, customer service, and website ~$34,485.
-Remastering costs ~$15,000
-Cost of CDs and packaging at $1.50/unit ~$12,000
-Other Costs(Mgmt,Insurance, etc...)~$10,000

Approx. Net Sales before taxes: $158,415

5 way split(4 daughters plus Tiff): $31,683 apiece

After tax split(Assuming 40% tax rate combined fed and state) ~$19,010 apiece take home

I admit that my cost assumption are based on guesswork, but I wouldn't think that I'm exponentially wrong...For the daughters who grew up wealthy(if not downright rich), I'm not sure that $20K is a huge motivator. Of course, there's probably more profit in selling the associated apparel line...

I agree that I don't think money is their prime motivation, unlike someone else's I could think of. But I disagree that they grew up wealthy. I mean the Dead didn't start really raking it in after overhead until the mid 80's. By then Jerry's daughters were almost grown. I'm sure they were by no means poor and they did get to live in a very nice part of the Country ( although that was a timing thing as you could actually afford to live in Marin once upon a time ), but I doubt they were incredibly rich. Besides, the fact that their Dad was pretty much MIA for them while he was not to his fans pretty much gives them a pass in my book not that they need one for anything they've sone so far. Hell they had to watch the braod their Dad was married to for all of five minutes take a crap on their Mother that raised them. I'll still never get over that. Even if Jerry did complain to koons etc. this was the mother of his kids she should not have been shut out.

Last, don't forget Jerry's first daughter he had with his first wife. Long grown up before any money was made.

Used to get JSB tix, as well as some GD tix, through Acacia Scully and Annabelle (sp?) Garcia, back in early to mid-80s (Frost, Greek, etc.) Annabelle used to be fixture outside the Stone shows for awhile. Sure, they were selling tix to make some cash, but mostly it seemed to help some folks get in. And although they had an "inside", I saw no evidence that they were rolling in the dough. Indeed, from some stories I heard (from them and others) no one was really raking it in prior to the Touch of Grey era, when all of the sudden the GD became the most profitable touring act in the world. Anyone recall Hunter's mail-order letter before MSG '87 shows warning about the "cigar smoke" and "muscle"?
